Delaware Delegation: Funds for Emergency Food & Shelter

December 31, 2009

WILMINGTON -- Today, Delaware Sens. Tom Carper and Ted Kaufman and Rep. Mike Castle announced that Delaware will receive $459,297 in 2010 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) under their Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP).

"We support FEMA’s efforts to lend assistance to those facing the unfortunate circumstances that surround homelessness and hunger," said the Delaware congressional delegation.  "The shelters and food banks that serve Delaware residents in need are providing an invaluable service.  As our economy slowly recovers, we will continue to work to eliminate the problems of homelessness and hunger but for now this federal grant will ensure greater assistance in hopes that no one in Delaware will go hungry or homeless.”

The EFSP grant program was first introduced in 1983 as part of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, and has since become a much-needed resource for states and cities working to combat homelessness and hunger.  The Delaware grant will help make available assistance for food, shelter, rent, mortgage and utilities for non-disaster related emergencies.

Specifically, Delaware's $459,297 will be distributed as follows:

Kent County = $81,756

New Castle County = $306,269

Sussex County = $71,272
