Kaufman Meets With Supreme Court Nominee Sonia Sotomayor
June 4, 2009
In a June 7 Wilmington News Journal op-ed, Sen. Kaufman rejects the"judicial activist" charges against Judge Sotomayor
WASHINGTON, DC - Senator Ted Kaufman (D-DE), member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, released the following statement today after his meeting with Judge Sonia Sotomayor, President Obama's nominee to the United States Supreme Court:
"My meeting with Judge Sotomayor this afternoon confirmed my belief that the President has selected a nominee with just the sort of experience and intellect to make an excellent Supreme Court Justice. She is as impressive in person as she is on her resume. But she understands that upholding the Constitution requires more than just intelligence - it requires an appreciation of how one's decisions affect ordinary Americans.
As the Senate continues its good faith exercise of its duty to ‘advise and consent,' I hope my colleagues will choose to focus on the quality and merits of Judge Sotomayor's judicial philosophy and approach. In the end, this entire process should be focused on a single, critical goal: ensuring the President's nominee has the integrity, intellect, experience, judgment, and wisdom to enable her to serve all Americans, and the rule of law, on our nation's highest court."
